Ecotourism in Tzara Dornelor – An instrument for sustainable development

PROJECT PARTNERS:

(1) Speological Foundation "Club Speo Bucovina" ( www.speo.org.ro ) – promotor; It works towards protection and sustainable capitalization of natural and cultural resources. Priority areas are environmental protection and promotion of traditional culture,

(2) Community-Based Natural Resource Mgmt. Network (CBNRM Net) ( www.cbnrm.net , www.cbnrm.eu ). CBNRM Net is registered in Norway. It provides tools aimed at networking and knowledge management of the field of CBNRM globally. Members use ICTs to network and share information and experiences, and

(3) Ass. of Ecotourism in Romania (AER) ( www.eco-romania.ro ) AER focuses on establishing partnerships among key stakeholders aimed at nature conservation and tourism development.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE: Develop and implement an approach to sustainable development through a responsible tourism, with a focus on ecotourism and renewable energy for biodiversity conservation.

PROJECT AREA AND TARGET GROUP: Tzara Dornelor is situated in Suceava County in northeast Romania. A number of communities and their inhabitants constitute the target group.

Objective I:  Develop a concept of sustainable development through responsible  tourism, with an emphasis on ecotourism

RESULTS: "The Guide of Good practice in ecotourism" and the Eco-label adopted by the local authorities of Tara Dornelor.

    - 65 people instructed in: "Strategies of developing local partnerships"; "Ecotourism and the evaluation of ecotourism services"; "Developing a business in ecotourism – funding opportunities"; "Interpretation techniques"
    - 5 communities will have increased awarness regarding how to preserve the quality of the local environment through sustaing ecotourism initiatives and using clean energy technologies in their houses;
    - Creating and seeing the "Eco -Cãlimani" network work. The members will also include representatives of the local authorities, tourism service providers, etc.
    - 1 ecotourism package proposed by the members of the "Eco - Cãlimani" network.
    - Participating at the International Tourism Fair in Norway. The promotion of the ecotourism destination Tzara Dornelor will be supported by printed materials and the professional slide show "In Tzara Dornelor".

Objective II:  Promote renewable energy in connection with biodiversity conservation

RESULTS:

    - 500 pupils from 5 schools involved in the "Eco-responsibility" activity
    - 5 events Green Caravan;
    - Members of the 5 communities are informed and motivated to participate at the training courses;
    - 15 persons are trained on how to build by their forces installations based on renewable energy;
    - 1 example of good practice for the 5 communities represented by 3 generators using clean energy placed in the project area and proving the efficiency of using renewable energy.

5 communities with increased awareness on how to preserve the quality of the natural environment where they live, by using clean energy technologies in their houses.
